Summary

Murderbot returns in its highly-anticipated, first, full-length standalone novel。

You know that feeling when you’re at work, and you’ve had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you're a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you're Murderbot。

Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A。I。 you’ll read this century。

I’m usually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are。

When Murderbot's human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action。

Drastic action it is, then。

Murderbot Diaries: 5This book is not as well put together as the previous ones。 The beginning is a mishmash of non-linear scenes, I assume the author decided to go with as a quick method to info-dump to manage the story length as opposed to a longer work that would have presented things more coherently。 It eventually gets a bit better, but flash-back scenes (also non-linear) are sprinkled throughout the rest。 To add to the jerkiness of the story flow, there's a lot of POV switches。 There's still Murderbot Diaries: 5This book is not as well put together as the previous ones。 The beginning is a mishmash of non-linear scenes, I assume the author decided to go with as a quick method to info-dump to manage the story length as opposed to a longer work that would have presented things more coherently。 It eventually gets a bit better, but flash-back scenes (also non-linear) are sprinkled throughout the rest。 To add to the jerkiness of the story flow, there's a lot of POV switches。 There's still a lot of action in this book and the overall plot moves along well。 Murderbot is still an engaging main character with all its flaws, and it was nice also to have Murderbot and ART back together again。 Ending per usual, not neatly executed and a bit disappointing。 I really think these books would have been better presented as one long one instead of these short stories。 。。。more

I'm the tiniest bit disappointed with this stallment, but I can't stress enough how it's still a very fun read despite some setbacks。What i wasn't a fan of:The soap opera-y narrative that permeated most of the reading experience just wasn’t for me。 A bunch of way-too-out-there scenarios wrapped with corny dialogue and comedy。 This series managed to be funny without taking away the grittiness of this universe and the extremely interesting discussions on societal issues and what constitutes humani I'm the tiniest bit disappointed with this stallment, but I can't stress enough how it's still a very fun read despite some setbacks。What i wasn't a fan of:The soap opera-y narrative that permeated most of the reading experience just wasn’t for me。 A bunch of way-too-out-there scenarios wrapped with corny dialogue and comedy。 This series managed to be funny without taking away the grittiness of this universe and the extremely interesting discussions on societal issues and what constitutes humanity, really。 But this stallment in particular was all over the place with it's campiness and plot wise? Got me whiplash going foward and back with a shitton of dialogue and vague (way too vague) descriptions thrown in the middle of things happening (characters and contexts blending together often) and still managed to be boring somehow until we got to the final parts that were pretty great。 I'm happy about Murderbot's development (It's changes are very noticeable, 10/10 chara building) but everything else didn't have nearly the same quality as the rest of the series somehow。 。。。more

This was the best of the Murderbot entries, hands down。 For me, anyway - I'm sure others may disagree (and they are allowed to, as literature is subjective, IMHO)。 Our favorite SecUnit is having emotional meltdowns, as well as a very complicated relationship with his transport buddy, ART。 And then there are all the humans! It surprised me at first that this entry was almost 3 times the length of any of the first four installments。 But once I started reading, it was clear there was much more to th This was the best of the Murderbot entries, hands down。 For me, anyway - I'm sure others may disagree (and they are allowed to, as literature is subjective, IMHO)。 Our favorite SecUnit is having emotional meltdowns, as well as a very complicated relationship with his transport buddy, ART。 And then there are all the humans! It surprised me at first that this entry was almost 3 times the length of any of the first four installments。 But once I started reading, it was clear there was much more to this story。 Honestly, it's all about Murderbot and his growth as。。。um。。。well, not as a human, obviously (and it would be disgusted at the suggestion)。 So its growth as a。。。um。。。OK, just its growth in relationships。 And its understanding of human relationships, interactions, etc。 Our SecUnit is responsible for Dr。 Mensah's daughter, Amena, as well as other friends from Preservation。 Of course, something bad/threatening happens。 What also happens is the appearance of ART (Asshole Research Transport), which is AWESOME! But it turns out ART really is an asshole - one that cares about its humans almost as much as SecUnit cares about Mensah, Amena, and the rest。 There's also Murderbot 2。0 as well as SecUnit 3 - new "faces" that just add to the depth of this work。 I almost didn't want this one to end。 Thankfully, there's another entry just waiting for me as soon as the husband finishes it。 Overall, I can't recommend this series enough。 It's got the science/robotics/technology side covered, but also the great storyline to boot。 。。。more

One of the minority that greatly preferred the novella format。 Still enjoyed, but it felt a bit long, stretched and overly complex at places。 Unlike the previous books, I found this to be a much harder slog and would get distracted after 10 minutes of reading, especially in the middle。 Ended beautifully though, and I love the characters and values of this series!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another lovely Murderbot book。 I love this protagonist so much。 The formulaic nature of the action and dialogue was more evident to me listening to it on audio (audio is just really not my preferred medium) but still an awesome romp。The return of ART was a particular plus and I hope we see more of it in future!

I read that this book could be read as a standalone without reading the others in the series, and in a bid to try and read all the Hugo nominated novels this year before the winner is announced, I did just that。 And I kind of have regrets, I feel like a lot of the references to events prior to the book went over my head。 Definitely want to revisit/read 1-4 and try this one again。

Really enjoyed this one off adventure (ART is my 2nd favourite character)。 It feels out of place as “5” in the series。 If/when I read these again I’ll read 6 first。

3。5/5 This was fine, not amazing but entertaining enough。 I don’t know I just think murderbot is best told in short formats。 Not really sure a whole novel was needed but I just absolutely love the characters so Martha Wells gets points for that。

Is it weird that every book in this series has made me cry? I’m going to have to buy the whole series to add to my comfort reads。 Ridiculously enjoyable。 I can’t believe I only have one more left 😭

literally been TWO MONTHS since i’ve finished a book。 i am WAY behind on my reading goal。 this installment was twice as long as the others but it gave it the ‘depth’ (for lack of a better word) of a more full novel。 even though i read the first and second halves almost two months apart, and it made an already potentially confusing story even more so, the last half was quite thrilling, and offered some quite interesting new experiences to the series。a great series。 read it。

It's no secret that I love murderbot。 Wells' first full-length novel was a welcome addition to the series。 Some enjoyable familiar characters return, the story moves at a good pace and I think there is some character development as well。My only critique is that some of the naming conventions in the series are a bit confusing as such it was sometimes difficult to get a hand on who were the bad guys and what they were up to。Still a great read and now I anxiously wait for the next book in the serie It's no secret that I love murderbot。 Wells' first full-length novel was a welcome addition to the series。 Some enjoyable familiar characters return, the story moves at a good pace and I think there is some character development as well。My only critique is that some of the naming conventions in the series are a bit confusing as such it was sometimes difficult to get a hand on who were the bad guys and what they were up to。Still a great read and now I anxiously wait for the next book in the series。 。。。more

I still enjoy murderbot (I still love ART hot dang) but this one didn't click as well for me as the novellas - maybe because it's been so long since I read the second-to-fourth books, and there was a lot of emotional baggage from events I only dimly remembered。 Still! It's quick and it's fresh and if you like non human PoVs (I sure do) then this is still a strong recommend。 who doesn't love murderbot。 I still enjoy murderbot (I still love ART hot dang) but this one didn't click as well for me as the novellas - maybe because it's been so long since I read the second-to-fourth books, and there was a lot of emotional baggage from events I only dimly remembered。 Still! But at the end when Murderbot discusses staying with ART with Dr。 Mensah, it was just tugging on my heartstrings, because it was just so precious, but also because it felt like a child growing up and moving away from home。 I just love all the characters a lot, and I don't have coherent thoughts, JUST FEELINGS。I was glad I could pretend to be too overwhelmed by being reassembled to respond, because I kind of was overwhelmed。 That was ART, and my humans, and humans I had known for maybe five minutes, and a Barish-Estranza SecUnit that 2。0 had randomly found, all cooperating to retrieve me。 I'm going to stop talking for a while now。"Preservation was the first place I was a part of and I don't want to not be a part of it。 But I like being with ART。 I want to keep being with it。。。"She smiled a little。 "The good thing is, you do know what you want。"I sort of did know。 It was a weird feeling。 "That's new。"(hide spoiler)] 。。。more
